I was born on the east coast and spent many a summer day on the shore. We learned early on that no matter how calm the surface looked the ocean could have a mighty undertow waiting for you below. Cancer like many chronic diseases is no different.
Markers,CTs, MRIs, blood work, etc. are all guides and sign posts on which way to treat. One might say “awesome job” while the other says “you my dear are fucked.” such was the case this last week.
For the last year my cancer markers have been increasing. Finally this last week we saw a drop! We were so excited. Finally some good news!! But I forgot about the undertow while I was running full speed into the seemingly beautiful ocean. And as my toes touched the sand under the surface I was pulled under, gasping for air.
The CT scan shows growth in my liver. The tiny little spot has doubled in size and is now considered suspicious. So our options are two…stay the course and pray or move to oral chemo. Chris and I decided it’s time to move to chemo. I hate making that step knowing I have limited steps. But the alternative is far worse. So chemo it is.
And now I’m here treading water. Because I love the ocean. For all it’s beauty and danger. We will continue to surf those waves as a family and throw a life preserver should the undertow be too much.
After all, I’m a pretty freaking strong swimmer and can tread water like a champ.
