We all have that one friend. The one that knows all your secrets. Enough to bury you if you ever ran for office. That one that never judges and will help you dispose of bodies if needed. That’s Gwen. But she’s not really one person. We kinda go together. We are a package deal much to our husbands dismay. We are Gwenna.
Gwen has been in my life since I was 16. I skipped my first class with her. She busted me out of detention for calling Mr Dahlke a dick. Skinny dipped for the first time with her (and our crushes). Danced naked in a fountain and are forever known as the naked fountain girls by the Appleton Police Dept. Gwen introduced me to the love of my life. Whether it was smoking weed at the top of a cliff at Devils Lake or simply sitting her in dad’s drive way drinking Coca Cola, Gwen just has always been there.
Some of my earliest memories of Gwen are filled with her love of bikes, singing, saxophone and all things Disney or Winnie the Pooh. The first gift I bought her son Joey was a Tigger plush toy. Now a days she still loves her bikes and music. I’m sure if I brought some Captain and Coca Cola to go with a Disney movie she’d be more than game to sing the day away with Ariel.
As I wrote in a previous post, I’m in the process of creating something on my back. My idea is to use it like a sheet of paper for my loved ones to doodle on. Quotes, artwork, song lyrics…honestly as long as it’s from the heart I don’t care. I got the first ink last fall with Lex. This weekend it was for Gwenna.
Covid made the experience a bit different. No partner in crime to join. But the crew at Colt’s Timeless Tattoo made it a very rad experience. My artist was Amanda Marquard. It was my first time meeting her so there’s always that weird do I really trust this stranger with my skin feeling but then I saw a drawing she did of Tupac. She good in my book. I had sent over a quote that Gwen had writing in her handwriting with a general idea of maybe a balloon when I first booked the appointment. Giving Mandy license with the balloon all I said was think Banksy meets Winnie the Pooh. An hour later she finished this….
Mandy asked if she could do the rest of the work on my back over the next few years. When you find your kind of people you just know. Steady with her hand and a quick wit I’d say she’s going to make my back the canvas for a story of friendship and love throughout my life.
Every tattoo I have is special and this one is no exception. I never did really think that one day our fun and antics would be “memories” for her to hold onto as I move onto the next adventure. Leave it to her to choose a Winnie the Pooh quote to encompass our lives together.
We are Gwenna. A treasure trove of secrets and mischievous glances. We are the pair your parents warned you about. And we are still having fun making memories…this time with more clothing and a wee bit less alcohol. Thank you Gwenna. I love you.
